The Story

How did you land your first job as a product manager?

I was working for a social gaming company as a Community Manager. (I got the job because I am a native English speaker - I had no experience in social media management or CRM). This position allowed me to get very close to the Product Manager of the game and learn from them. I also had to learn everything I could about the game itself to make my work as a Community Manager as effective as possible. When I found out that the PM was leaving, I expressed an interest in the position to our Group Leader. He interviewed me and gave me a test in excel to see if I could make sense of the spreadsheet. Once I officially became the PM, he took it upon himself to train me and teach me everything about optimizing funnels, writing requirements, working with developers, etc. I owe all of my success to him deciding to give me a chance and take me under his wing.
