The Story

How did you land your first job as a product manager?

I was working as a Project Manager in a startup and I wanted to transition to a Product Manager role. I believed that there was more growth and a defined career path in Product that as Project Manager. I was also interested in Product Design and using data insights to improve the product so this change seemed like the perfect match. However, in the startup where I was working for, the Product Role was merged in the CEO role, so I decided to look for another place to make my transition.

I landed in another startup (totally different industry) that was changing their business from a service vision to a product one and need it a PM. In this new job, I was the only PM for a year, until we established a proper Product department.

The challenge

What was the biggest challenge in your first year as a PM?

Starting a PM career at a Startup which was also rethinking themselves as a product company, brought two main challenges for me. The first one was not having another Product Manager as a reference. The second one was working with an IT team that wasn’t used to the Product Development Methodology. In addition, this made finding the balance of technical task and product task a challenging work of evangelization and negotiation.

Other complexity was the lack of developers. At some point, it was 1 PM - 1 developer, so the discovery part of the product went faster than the development speed. In summary, defining the product while the company vision and business model was being developed, was one of the hardest tasks I was required.
